Unlocking Hidden Revenue with Intelligent Product Segmentation
The Challenge
A mid-sized e-commerce retailer was struggling with Google Shopping campaign performance. Despite following standard best practices, they were experiencing inefficient ad spend, poor visibility for many products, and disappointing ROAS.
Large portions of their product catalog were receiving zero impressions despite having sales potential
Budget was disproportionately allocated to a small selection of products that weren't necessarily the most profitable
One-size-fits-all bidding strategy failed to account for significant performance variations across product types
Our Approach
We implemented the Explorer plan to create a sophisticated product segmentation approach for their Google Shopping campaigns:
Strategic Product Categorization
We developed seven strategic product segments based on performance data: Zombie Items (products with potential but no visibility), High Performers, Medium Performers, Low Performers, Seasonal Items, Bestsellers, and Price-Competitive Items.
Each segment received customized bidding strategies and budget allocations that matched their specific performance characteristics and potential, replacing the previous one-size-fits-all approach.
Zombie Item Activation
We identified "Zombie Items" – products with sales potential that were receiving minimal or zero visibility in Google Shopping. These products were given specialized promotion strategies to unlock their hidden revenue potential.
By allocating a strategic portion of the budget to these previously invisible products, we expanded the effective catalog size and discovered new revenue streams that had been completely overlooked.
Competitive Price Positioning
We created a dedicated segment for price-competitive items where the retailer had a significant price advantage. These products received enhanced visibility to capitalize on their favorable market position.
The system automatically monitored competitive pricing data and adjusted campaign settings in real-time as market conditions changed, ensuring the client always maximized their competitive advantages.
Performance-Based Budget Allocation
We implemented an algorithm that continuously analyzed performance data and dynamically redistributed budget from low-performing products to high-performing ones, optimizing the overall ROAS of the account.
This automated system eliminated wasteful spend on underperforming products while simultaneously ensuring that top performers received adequate budget to maximize their revenue potential.

- High-performing products saw efficiency improvements of over 200%
- Price-competitive items achieved 43% higher CTR than account average
- Effective catalog size increased by 65% through strategic visibility distribution
